Hip and Groin

Injuries and conditions: hip and groin pain

BUTTOCK PAIN

This is commonly referred pain from the lumbar spine or sacroiliac joint. Can be related to piriformis syndrome or sciatica (see below). It is important to get this assessed properly to diagnose and treat the injured structure.

GILMORE'S GROIN

Painful at the lower stomach area caused by a tear in one of your stomach muscles. Surgery is often the treatment, but it can respond well to physiotherapy.

GROIN STRAIN

Also known as adductor strain. Normally a sporting injury where pain is found on the inside of your thigh due to a tear in the adductor muscles or tendons.

ILIOTIBIAL BAND (ITB) SYNDROME

AKA ITB; shortened for a good reason. Pain in the outside of your thigh very commonly gives hip or knee pain. Often aggravated by lots of running, squatting, lunges, stairs or getting up from a chair. Responds well to hands on physiotherapy and specific exercises.

OSTEOARTHRITIS (OA)

This is a fancy name for wear and tear that can happen in most of your joints, most common being knees, hips, back, neck, shoulders and fingers. The joints become worn like a rusty chain on a bike and cause pain. Often aggravated by cold and wet weather. Can have acute episodes of aggravation and painful swelling. Physiotherapy can be very helpful with OA using treatments such as mobilisation, exercises, acupuncture etc.

PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME

This is aggravation of your piriformis muscle which is a small but very important muscle deep in your buttock. It can commonly give buttock pain and sciatica. The muscle is normally aggravated secondary to an injury of another structure between your hip and lumbar spine. At Advantage Physio we will assess the whole area so we can treat all injuries.

SACROILIAC JOINT (SIJT) DYSFUNCTION

This is a very big joint that connects your spine to your pelvis. It is a common cause of lower back/hip pain and sciatic type symptoms. Must be treated well as they generally do not get better by themselves.

SCIATICA

This involves the sciatic nerve being compromised and sending pain, numbness or pins and needles down the back of your leg. It is often aggravated by a disc bulge, a joint or muscle pinching the nerve. Physiotherapy treatment can be very beneficial in all cases.

TROCHANTERIC BURSITIS

Usually presents with pain on the outside of your hip when climbing stairs, getting out of a car or running. Bursa can be found in many joints in the body. They are fluid filled sacks that reduce the amount of friction between two structures. If this gets inflamed then it is called bursitis. Very important to treat tight muscles and assess and treat biomechanical alignment.
